Taxpayers slugged $100k for Cocaine Cassie’s defence

As the drug smuggler dubbed ‘Cocaine Cassie’ starts life as a sentenced prisoner in Colombia, it has been revealed taxpayers forked out more than $100,000 for her legal defence.

Cassie Sainsbury has admitted to trying to smuggle 6kg of cocaine out of Bogota in headphones in April.

On Thursday she was sentenced to six years’ behind bars after a prison deal was signed off and she was ordered to pay a fine of $130,000.

Sainsbury was detained April 12 at Bogota's international airport when caught trying to smuggle about 6kg of cocaine inside packages of headphones.

The Aussie could be free in two and a half years if she behaves behind bars and works while she serves out her sentence.

While the Australian government won’t cover Sainbury’s fine, Seven News has revealed taxpayers will pay for her five months of legal assistance – with the bill now more than $100,000.

The first round of taxpayer dollars was sent to Sainsbury’s Colombian lawyer in the past fortnight, but her legal team say the money was deserved.

“These people (like Cassie) are just victim of bigger criminals,” Cassie’s legal team said.

“This plea bargain was given to her as a result that she was under threat to proceed with what she did.”

This is wrong. Every step should be made to recoup the cost of her legal fees when she returns to Australia. She will most likely receive much more by selling her story to a trashy magazine.

There is a great fault with the Australian Government Wheel Of Fortune, each pin has a sticker on where to waste money, drug pedlars, drug users, drug importers, rapists, paedophiles, liars, cheats, thieves, murderers, female bashers, illegal immigrants, genuine dole bludgers, a certain species of humanoids without a womb and completely unable to produce offspring to ensure the continuation of the race of genuine male and female Australians who will continue with the normal method of the desire to produce offspring ... .
