At least two people are dead and 26 have been injured in a mass shooting at a country music festival in Las Vegas, a hospital spokesman says.

Authorities have shut down part of the Las Vegas strip after at least one active shooter opened fire into the concert crowd.

Las Vegas Police have confirmed at least one suspect has been shot. It remains unclear if that shooter acted alone.

University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen said 26 people were admitted to the hospital. She says, of those, at least two have died, 12 are in a critical condition and the rest are being evaluated.

Officer Aden Ocampo-Gomez said police rushed to the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino after witnesses said shots were fired at the Route 91 Country Music festival, which was taking place just across the road from the popular casino.

Witnesses say the shots appeared to come from a balcony on the adjoining casino at the crowd of the Route 91 festival on the grounds below.

“They were firing from somewhere high, and they were unloading clip after clip after clip after clip,” a witness told Nathan O’Neal, a reporter for a local news station, KSNV News.

“It was hundreds of shots.”

University Medical Centre spokeswoman Danita Cohen said the Las Vegas hospital is taking in “several” people with gunshot wounds.

One Twitter user posted that the hotel was on lockdown, while another, citing police scanners, posted there were two shooters on the 32nd floor of the hotel who had shot at a bodyguard and police.

Witnesses report seeing multiple injuries and fatalities as they fled the concert show, while other concertgoers were trampled as people ran from the scene.

“We’re investigating reports of an active shooter near/around Mandalay Bay Casino. Asking everyone to please avoid the area,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.

A triage centre has been set up at Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue with road closures in place.

McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas has been closed by authorities.

While France and Canada are dealing with terrorist attacks carried out by individuals in the name of Allah, we have yet another mass shooting in the "land of the free" where deranged individuals are free to carry fire arms. I'm not suggesting this is an ISIS inspired terror attack. I am pointing out that Islamic extremists don't have a mortgage on the murder stakes.

The problem is Charles, firearms have a lot to answer for when it come to this. The people who own firearms and have no real use for them I believe have physical issue to start of with.

Tragically the death toll is now well over 50 and still rising.

The chart that charka posted trivializes the issue of gun deaths and is misleading as they only present the 2016 figures up until June and don't include deaths other than murders.

To gain a better idea of how many deaths per annum are caused by guns we need to look at some complete figures:

Guns are expected to surpass car crashes for the number of American deaths caused in 2015. In 2013, there were 33,636 Americans killed by guns versus 33, 782 fatal crashes. The most recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics released in 2013 shows the number of gun deaths by state - whether it was homicide, accidental discharge, or intentional self-harm.

Which state has the fewest firearm-related deaths? With a rate of 2.6 deaths per 100,000 population, it's Hawaii. Seven of the top ten states for gun violence also had higher than the normal homicide rate nationally.

https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/death-by-gun-top-20-states-with-highest-rates/

The 2013 figure indicates that about 92 people die each day through gunshots.

If we only talk about gun homicides, consider the following:

"In Poland and England, only about one out of every million people die in gun homicides each year — about as often as an American dies in an agricultural accident or falling from a ladder. In Japan, where gun homicides are even rarer, the likelihood of dying this way is about the same as an American’s chance of being killed by lightning — roughly one in 10 million.
In the United States, the death rate from gun homicides is about 31 per million people — the equivalent of 27 people shot dead every day of the year."

Sadly, no one in authority will call this a terror attack, the progressives will, once again, call for gun control, the NRA and the Republicans will go into damage control......and, as usual, it will be forgotten within a month.

Apparenty, Stephen Paddock has left no indication of what might have triggered, or motivated him.

My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends.

Good afternoon , Michael W. I think we would have to agree on the fact (even though it's a cliché) that guns don't kill people, people kill people! I'm sure that many here would own a gun, but how many have shot anyone? I'm hoping....none. It's maniacs that are problem, not an inanimate object! You are right that some people should not have any weapons, but, generally, if someone wants to kill, they'll find a way! If a person can't get a gun, they could use a vehicle. Psychotic people always find "the way!" http://fairdinkumnewschat.b1.jcink.com/uploads/fairdinkumnewschat/smiley_IMHO.png

Las Vegas shooting: Police find more firearms and explosives in gunman Stephen Paddock's house

Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock may have had even more sinister plans, with police uncovering a number of weapons and explosives at three separate locations.

Key points

Police found 23 firearms in Stephen Paddock's hotel room and 19 at his home

Police also found explosives in his home and ammonium nitrate in his car

Authorities still want to question Paddock's girlfriend Marilou Danley

Paddock shot at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Sunday local time from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, killing at least 59 people in the largest mass shooting in modern US history.

The 64-year-old shot a security guard in the leg before taking aim at crowds from his hotel room window and killing himself.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) said they found 23 firearms in the hotel room and a further 19 firearms and several thousand rounds of ammunition at his home in Mesquite, Nevada.

The firearms found in the hotel had calibres ranging from .308 to .223, and a handgun was also among the weapons.

Police believe Paddock smuggled the weapons into the hotel using more than 10 suitcases, which he methodically brought to the hotel room one-by-one.

The gunman checked into the hotel room, where he later killed himself, four days prior to the massacre, using his girlfriend's ID.

Some of the rifles in the hotel room appeared to have been modified in an attempt to convert them into machine guns.

Paddock could also have illegally converted semi-automatic rifles into fully automatic guns, a process made easier by the presence of guides uploaded to the internet.

In his Mesquite home police found the explosive tannerite, which can be bought commercially. In his car, police also found ammonium nitrate, which can be used to make bombs.

Police have also searched a home in northern Nevada but have not revealed what they retrieved from the house.

LVMPD Sheriff Joe Lombardo said they were also investigating whether Paddock attended the Life is Beautiful Festival, which was held in Las Vegas just over a week ago.

He said they believed Paddock went to the festival, which had a line-up including Blink-182, Chance the Rapper and Lorde, but had not yet confirmed that.

A woman believed to be in relationship with Paddock, Marilou Danley, will still be questioned by police.

Sherriff Lombardo said Paddock and Ms Danley were living together and she would be questioned on whether she knew about the number of firearms found in the home in Mesquite.

Ms Danley, from Australia, is currently in Tokyo and police are making arrangements to contact her upon her return.

In their home police also retrieved electronic devices, including a computer hard drive, which they are evaluating.

They have not yet found any type of manifesto or established a motive for Paddock's actions.

Sherriff Lombardo said he aware of reports Paddock had set up surveillance to monitor himself, but he did not have information around the claim.

One gun dealer who sold weapons to Paddock has come forward to police, but authorities are aware of others who may have also sold him firearms.

Nevada law lets residents own machine guns, if they are permitted under federal law.

The state does not require licences, registration or a waiting period for firearms, including semi-automatic rifles.

Authorities believe the 64-year-old used at least two weapons.

Police are trying to establish Paddock's movements two weeks prior to the massacre.

I would certainly call it a terror attack Bill.

I have heard on news reports that IS are claiming responsibility but police have not found any links at this point.

Regardless of whether IS are being truthful or lying I call it a terror attack.

I think the US have always had a higher death rate from firearms than most other nations, if not all other nations. I believe that it has always been far higher even than ours was before our gun laws were introduced. Something in their water I suspect.
