Holden dream cruise: tribute to Peter Brock as Adelaide farewells its iconic car factory

Thousands of Holden fans -- and more than 1200 pristine classic cars -- celebrated the end of an era today, ahead of this Friday’s shutdown of Australia’s last automotive manufacturing facility in Elizabeth, South Australia.
Bev Brock, wife of Holden racing legend, the late Peter Brock, waved off the epic convoy on Holden’s "dream cruise" led by Holden boss Mark Bernhard riding in the very first Holden built in 1948 and modern era motorsport star Mark Skaife in one of the last Commodore V8s.

Behind them in a slow moving procession that weaved through the suburb of Elizabeth of the outskirts of Adelaide -- the home of the last surviving Holden factory -- were more than 1200 immaculate examples of almost every Holden made locally.

The two-hour cruise brought Elizabeth to a standstill as fans from both Holden and Ford stopped alongside the route to pay their respects.

"It doesn’t matter ... whether you’re blue or red," said Bev Brock. "Ford fans supported Peter and Holden fans supported Ford drivers. It makes no difference, we are Australian and it’s all part of our history."

Bev Brock said she was "unbelievably honoured to be part of the completion of Australia’s iconic heritage".

"The red blood flowed in Peter’s veins in every sense and he’d be looking down to every proud Australian saying ’this is something you have to honour’."

Holden boss Mark Bernhard said: "Adelaide does hold a very special place in our hearts, it’s where we started our business back in 1856."

General Motors used the Holden company to assemble cars from foreign parts in the early 1900s, until it bought the company in 1931.

It planned to build a uniquely Australian vehicle but those plans were put on hold with the outbreak of World War II.

The first Holden rolled off the Port Melbourne production line in 1948; Elizabeth began making car bodies in 1958 and transitioned to complete car assembly in 1965.

"It’s a very emotional day for us all, the people who’ve come out today, the number of cars here to celebrate a long history making some of the best cars in the world, it’s just awesome," said Skaife.

"It’s a big part of the culture of this country and today is a great celebration of what Holden means to Australians," he said.

It's truly the end of an era in Adelaide as the Holden factory closes its doors.

Holden dusted off more than 20 cars from its private collection, including the first Holden made locally and the 7 millionth example, a Commodore sedan from 2008.

The last Holden is due to roll off the Elizabeth production line this Friday, October 20. As with the Ford and Toyota factory closures in Melbourne, the Holden shutdown will be held behind closed doors and no media will be allowed in on the day.

What was the purose of donating untold millions to these companies if they were going to p#%% off anyway? And, where did this money go? Are the companies going to give any back, with a "Sorry, we have to leave now," and refund anything? Had we not subsidised them PJ, they would have been gone years ago, probably decades ago.

Just like if we were not subsidising windmills and solar panels there would be none here.
