This question is in response to Jonno's lament (posted elsewhere) about the misuse and "Americanisation" of the English language.

I'm asking members to post the most annoying examples that they encounter.

As a sports fan I often despair over the use of adjectives when it is an adverb that should be employed by the 'experts' covering games. An example of this would be, "He moved quick to intercept the pass." when it should be "quickly". If the commentator wished to use the word "quick" he should have said, "He was quick to intercept the pass."
Note: I used the words "should have" rather than the often heard "should of".

If commentators and media announcers wish to use abbreviated word forms, why do they insist on saying "On the other side of" instead of "After" when telling us what is to be seen/heard after a break?

Finally, it annoys me that my spell-check wants me to replace "s" with "z" in words such as organise, rationalise and formalise.

What are your pet hates?

All of those comments, Charles, annoy the 💩 out of me, and these are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg! There is an ad running on TV at the moment, where the lady speaking actually says "impordant" as clear as a bell. She almost puts emphasis on the D! But why? Another one is the word 'building'. A lot of people pronounce it with a W. As in...buiwding! Again, I ask...WHY? http://fairdinkumnewschat.b1.jcink.com/uploads/fairdinkumnewschat/smiley_don_t_know.gif
I could go on all day, but you get the picture! http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/mad.gif

Cahrles, (Charles) Good post.

You can change your dictionary to an English, or even Australian version instead of US.

Traveling instead of travelling, they don’t seem to understand that dropping the extra t changes how the word should be pronounced.

Have you seen how our youth try to use a knife and fork American style?
Our youth can’t adopt americanisms fast enough. I think it is a shame that a lot of the Aussie is being left behind as not “cool”. All in all our world is disappearing and the new is fast approaching, 1984 anyone?
